SHORT PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
ISTRAMUZA is an interdisciplinary scientific and artistic project focused on identifying, mapping, cataloguing, digitising and revitalising the musical output of Istrian composers and composers who lived in Istria, as well as on implementing Istrian musical heritage in educational practice. The research is focused on works preserved in archives of institutions of various profiles (libraries, churches, museums, cultural societies) in the Istria County and Europe, with special emphasis on previously unknown, newly discovered compositions. The project consists of three work packages guided by the preservation of Istrian musical heritage and the valorisation of composers and musicians (both well-known and less known) who were born or were active in Istria. The results will be used by current and future generations for music performance, research and education. The project examines their musicological significance, stylistic and historical value, and their potential for integration into teaching practice through didactically innovative strategies. Music listening and literature-based activities support the principle of local heritage with a multimodal and interdisciplinary approach. The project also investigates performance possibilities, stimulates renewed interpretation and inclusion of works into concert programmes, thereby enriching the repertoire and promoting Istrian musical heritage. Results will be disseminated through scientific papers, a monograph and handbook, conference presentations, a digital repository, educational workshops and concerts, ensuring long-term availability. The project will also create materials for a new university course, both in regular study programmes and lifelong learning programmes, for example for training tourist guides, further linking cultural heritage and tourism. The project’s main strength is its long-term usability: it will contribute to heritage preservation, be applicable in education and cultural tourism, and strengthen awareness of the value of Istria’s musical identity within the European context.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES:
- C1 refers to the mapping of music collections in the Istria County and Europe, with the establishment of cooperation with relevant institutions in Croatia and abroad, forming the basis for the collection and systematisation of sources.
- C2 foresees that, based on the research conducted, musical manuscripts and scores will be identified, analysed and interpreted, and that a repository will be created and made available to researchers, musicians and educators.
- C3 refers to the implementation of works from Istrian musical heritage in educational practice through the application of a cognitive-emotional strategy of music listening.
- C4 aims at strengthening academic and non-academic, local, regional and national awareness of the importance of Istrian artistic musical heritage in the context of cultural identity through dissemination and popularisation of the scientific results obtained.
